The New York Yankees are arguably one of, if not the most iconic franchises in Major League Baseball. With 27 World Series wins, the Yankees lead every franchise in terms of tasting glory on the biggest stage in baseball. In addition, they are the only team to win the World Series four times in a row, which they did on two separate occasions.
Over the years, the franchise saw iconic players ranging from Babe Ruth to Derek Jeter bring laurels to the city of New York. While they achieved tremendous success, they also became one of the most globally recognised franchises on the planet.
However, they struggled to emulate those levels of success in recent times. This season, they embarked on a difficult quest to reach the postseason, and clinch the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Are the New York Yankees competing in the playoffs this year?
The 2021 MLB regular season saw one of the wildest finishes in recent memory. While the National League saw its playoff spots sealed in a nonchalant manner, the American League had four teams competing for two spots in the AL Wildcard game.
The Yankees featured among those four teams, alongside the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners. In a flurry to the finish, the Yankees edged out the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 in their final regular season game.

Their 92-70 record saw them tied with the Red Sox as the qualified for the AL Wildcard game. This game took place on October 5, with a place in the ALDS up for grabs. Despite the Yankees’ best efforts, they lost the game 6-2 to the Red Sox, which ended their postseason run.
While they suffered a bitter end to their playoff run, the city of New York also matched an unwanted piece of their sporting history. For the first time in over a century, the city will go without a major title for a decade.
When will the Yankees play next?
While their 2021 season ended on a sour note, the playoffs continue to take place. The Yankees will take part in Spring Training from February 26, which will go on for over a month.

On March 31, 2022, the Yankees will head to Texas to face the Rangers on Opening Day. Their first home game will take place exactly a week later against the Red Sox as this fiery rivalry will add another chapter on April 7, 2022.
