“I Look Pretty Strong”: Venus Williams Opens Up on Her Return at Australian Open 2022

Seven-time singles Grand Slam champion Venus Williams is a household name across the world. On top of her sixteen Grand Slam doubles titles, the former world No. 1 also holds four Olympic gold medals to her name.

Over the course of her twenty-seven-year-old career, the American legend has dominated all aspects of the game. Consequently, Venus has etched her name in the history books for eternity.

During the 2021 season, Venus Williams served upsetting news to fans by announcing her withdrawal from the US Open, citing problems with her leg. She had last played in August, after which she made known her heartbreaking withdrawal from the US Open. Joining her on the withdrawal-by-injury list were Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and her sister Serena Williams.

Venus Williams has not graced a tennis court on the professional tour since her last bout at the Chicago Women’s Open in August. Venus had a less than gracious first-round exit at the hands of Taiwanese Hseih Su-Wei in straight sets. Subsequently, she announced her exit from the US Open owing to problems with her leg all year long.

Today, on November 23rd, Venus greeted fans to a fifteen-minute long interaction, discussing the upcoming movie King Richard, her fans, and her injuries, among other things. She also addressed a question when asked about her return to tennis in the 2022 Australian Open.

“Are we gonna see you at the Australian Open?” a fan asked on Venus’ Instagram live.

To this, the 41-year-old smiled, took a step back, and said, “Well, I look pretty strong, right? I’m working on it. I’m working on like- getting as strong as I can.”

When another fan followed the previous question up with inquiries about Venus’ knee, Williams replied- “I’m working on that too. I’m not going to let any secrets out.”

Fans are eager to see the Williams sisters back on the court

The younger of the Williams duo, Serena Williams had to put an end to her 2021 season after tearing her hamstring in June at Wimbledon. The 40-year-old has since been in recovery over the months and hopes to gear up for her return on the court soon.

During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on his late-night show, Serena gave out positive news to fans, stating that her hamstring took forever to recover, but is in much better shape now.

When Kimmel asked her if she was going to return for the Australian Open in January 2022, she replied that she was ready to come back. This was met with thunderous applause by the studio audience, who, understandably, can not wait to see the 23-time Grand Slam champion play again.
