Last year, US athlete Sha’Carri Richardson was in the news for testing positive for an anti-doping test. After setting the sixth-fastest time in women’s 100-meters history, Richardson faced a one-month ban for failing that doping test. Recently, Shaun White expressed his views on the problems faced by international athletes, bearing Sha’Carri in context.
Shaun White addresses the Sha’Carri Richardson controversy
“I don’t know. I mean, there’s a lot of struggles going on out there and I will say that it’s interesting: My uncle has gone through a lot of… he suffers certain ailments and illnesses, and it’s definitely helped him cope rather than, you know, he was on painkillers. And that was a really, really tough time for everybody. And so, yeah, I just see it around more. I’m sure there will be a day when it’s really not frowned upon by any society or any group of people,” said White.

While Richardson faced the ban, she returned for her 100-meter competition during the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Oregon. The race saw her facing the likes of the famous Jamaican trio that dominated the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. With all eyes set on her, she made her anticipated comeback.
Richardson’s hyped comeback
As for Richardson, when it rains, it pours. After all the hype for her exciting return, she finished last in the 100-meters competition that featured Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. In addition, her post-race press conference did not do her any favors as she went on a rant.

She is just 21, and the sky is the limit for the US wonder kid. With Thompson-Herah lurking over her shoulder, it would not be easy for her to catch pace. But, nothing is impossible in sports.
Can she put her disappointment behind her and have a better 2022 athletic season?
